The World Without You

The coffee’s just coffee this morning,
The sun forgot to rise.
The dog keeps staring at the doorway,
Like she’s reading my mind.

I caught myself turning to tell you
Something tragic in the news…
Funny how time keeps spinning,
But never seems to move.

The birds are singing out of tune.
Rain falls up instead of down.
The wind forgot which way to blow.
The compass is a little off-north.
The moon beats sunset to the sky.
The horizon leans a little.
Everything feels almost true…
Until I look for you.

It’s the world without you.
Not just quieter but untrue.
Like gravity forgot its purpose,
Like the sky misplaced its blue.
There’s an emptiness that echoes
Through everything I say and do.
I’m still standing in the same places.
It’s just the world without you.

I keep finding little moments
I’d have handed off to you.
A joke, a song, a crooked sunset,
Something only we’d find true.
Funny how a thought keeps searching
For the place it always knew…
Every moment lands a little sideways…
Until it lands with you.

The stars are hanging just a little lower.
The tide came in before the moon.
Morning showed up without a warning.
The night’s been ending far too soon.
Everything feels almost true…
Until I look for you.

It’s the world without you.
Not just quieter but untrue.
Like gravity forgot its purpose,
Like the sky misplaced its blue.
There’s an emptiness that echoes
Through everything I say and do.
I’m still standing in the same places.
It’s just the world without you.

The birds will find their harmony.
The rain will learn its way down.
The wind will find its direction.
The compass will come back ‘round.
The sky will find its missing blue…
The day you walk back through.
